Grafting density of PEG onto gelatin layer characterized by QCM |

Quartz crystal microbalance with impedance monitoring (QCM-Z) was used to investigate the grafting density of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) onto gelatin layer. Surfaces modified with end-terthered PEG have been shown to have excellent anti-biofouling properties. Although the mechanisms are unclear, it has been suggested that the grafting density is one of the important factors. However, the techniques for the characterization of the grafting density of PEG have been still insufficient. In the present study various concentrations of PEG-succinimidyl succinate were added to gelatin layer and the grafting density of PEG onto gelatin layer was investigated quantitatively as a function of the concentration of PEG by using QCM. QCM-Z technique allowed simultaneous measurements of the grafting density and the viscoelastic property of PEG onto gelatin layer under various conditions. |
