Aquatic toxicity assessment of ionic liquids depending on their cations using a phytoplankton, Selenastrum capricornutum |

Before the likely release of Ionic liquids as altrnative solvents into the environment, it is necessary to determine their toxic and antimicrobial effects as well as to discover less toxic and easily biodegradable ILs. In this study, we examined the effect of cations on the toxicity of ILs using the alga, Selenastrum capricornutum. The EC50 values for the ILs with different cations showed that toxicity of phosphonium salt is the highest than other cations. Further research should be done for better understanding the influence of cations on the toxicity of ILs. |
