In this study, we fabricated a smart window with thermo-responsive hydrogels that was prepared by grafting of multi-component copolymers with methyl cellulose (MC). The hydrogels exhibit the nearly linear transmittance change from transparent to opaque over a wide temperature range, because the copolymer chains show different lower critical solution temperature depending on monomer composition. We also found that the hydrogels show large thermal hysteresis, which is resulted from the strong interaction between each MC chain at a shrunken state. Developed smart window shows various transparencies depending on the voltage, and their optical states were maintained without further electrical energy through thermal hysteresis. |
