Local phase transition at crack edges of Mo1-xWxTe2 polymorphs |

Phase engineering of two-dimensional(2D) materials has received a lot of attention, however, the intensive studies have been limited because of difficulties to probe nanometer-scale samples with macroscopic experimental techniques. We report on a nanometer-scale probe of the phase transition between the semiconductor 2H phase and the metal 1T′ phase of the Mo1-xWxTe2 alloys. We found that as W atoms accumulate, cracks of it increase at corners. Also, the crystallinity of mechanically exfoliated 2H-Mo1-xWxTe2 flakes are weakened. With mild laser irradiation of 2H-Mo1-xWxTe2 flakes, we observe phase transition at the edge and other areas. And we found phase transition according to the accumulation amount of W atoms. Our study clarifies the role of atomic structures on the crystallinity of two-dimensional materials based on heterophase structures and enables energy conversion-storage and application to optoelectronic devices. |
