Crosslinked Sulfonated Poly(arylene ether) for Chlorine Resistant Reverse Osmosis Membrane |

End-group crosslinked (C-ESFxx-BP) and non-crosslinked (N-ESFxx-BP) sulfonated poly(arylene ether) (SPAE) membranes with varying degree of sulfonation (DS) were prepared and evaluated for use as a potential reverse osmosis (RO) membrane. C-ESFxx-BP membranes were obtained by covalent crosslinking between ethynyl groups at the end of polymer chain via thermal curing. Particularly, crosslinked membrane could enhance the salt (NaCl) rejection property up to 98.4 % comparing to non-crosslinked membrane for the DS of 70 % and also showed the decrease in water permeability from 0.8 Lμm/m2hbar (N-ESF70-BP) to 0.6 Lμm/m2hbar (C-ESF70-BP). Moreover, these crosslinked and non-crosslinked SPAE membranes display the long-term stability longer than 30 days for the operation under high acidic chlorine condition unlike commercial PA membranes, which are unstable for chlorine treatment. |
