Microalgae is considered as a promising feedstock for biodiesel because of its high lipid content and outstanding biomass productivity. However, various energy intensive downstream processes lower the CO2 reduction efficiency of the bio-derived liquid fuel. In this sense, direct combustion of microalgal biomass is worth considering as a real CO2 reduction strategy owing to the simple production processes. Herein, we conducted the holistic assessment on microalgae as a direct combustion fuel in terms of the energy yield, calorific productivity, combustion performance as well as CO2 sequestration ability. |
