Hydrogels are hydrophilic three-dimensional polymer networks capable of absorbing a large volume of water or other biological fluid. Stimuli-sensitive hydrogels have the capability to change their swelling behavior, permeability or mechanical strength in response to external stimuli, such as small changes in pH, ionic strength, temperature and electromagnetic radiation. In this study, the semi-interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels composed of PVA and PEI were prepared to have electro and pH sensitivities. The swelling behaviors and pulsatile bending angle of hydrogels with various compositions were measured under the various temperatures and voltages. In the result, high PEI content in the hydrogel exhibited the rapid swelling and deswelling response in the increase of temperature and voltage. In addition, results for the bending angle of the semi-IPN film under DC stimuli revealed that the bending rates increased with temperature and voltage. Thus, the hydrogels will be available for the artificial muscles or actuators. |
