Vinyl-polynorbornene has good optical transparency, high thermal stability, and low dielectric constant. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has good optical transparency, but it has relatively a low glass transition temperature for opto-electronics substrates. Graft copolymerization of norbornene derivative and methyl methacrylate was performed by the “grafting through” approach. Initiator-moiety for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was introduced to the polynorbornene side-chain. Bulk polymerization was carried out for MMA grafting. GPC showed narrow mono-disperse molecular weight distribution. Poly(norbornene derivative-graft-MMA) has a high optical transparency, and its glass transition temperature is increased to ca 130 ℃. |
