In this work, several methods have been used to introduce sulfur containing groups in supported ACs. The chemical properties of these sulfur-treated ACs have been evaluated to determine their mercury adsorption capacities. Gas-phase elemental mercury (Hg0) removal by ACs impregnated with sulfur, and the techniques of Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the sulfur-treated ACs. The adsorption test results showed that sulfur impregnation significantly led to the high performance Hg0 adsorption of the ACs. In this result, the sulfur treatment can be an important method for improving the mercury adsorption performance of adsorbents. |
