Graphenes offer high mechanical and electrical properties when they are used as fillers in polymer nanocomposites. In this study, graphenes were prepared by a chemical method. To take full advantage of polymer nanocomposites with graphenes homogeneous dispersion and strong interfacial adhesion are essential and these can be achieved by functionalizing graphenes effectively. Therefore, in this study, amine groups were introduced onto the surfaces of the graphenes via treating them with 4-aminobenzoic acid in polyphosphoric acid. FT-IR spectroscopy and TGA were used to confirm the functionalization. Epoxy nanocomposites comprising the graphenes were prepared and their characteristics were investigated by DSC, DMA and TMA. According to the SEM of the fractured-surfaces of the nanocomposites, the functionalization induced strong interfacial bonding resulting in considerable improvements in the performance of the nanocomposites. |
