Carbon black has been widely applied as an electrical conductive or UV stabilizing agent in plastic, pigment in ink formulations and filler to reinforce polymer in various industries. This study investigates surface modification of carbon black using polymerizable surfactant for improving dispersion stability in aqueous solution. Surface elemental analysis, functional group analysis, particle size and distribution, zeta-potential and dispersion stability of carbon black without and with polymerized surfactant layers are measured and compared to each other. The results are discussed in terms of the distribution of surface functional group and electrical repulsion between particles. |
