Poly(lactic acid)(PLA) has high modulus and strength but brittle while poly(butyleneadipate-co-butyleneterephthalate)(PBAT) possesses tough and flexible properties. In order to complement both PLA and PBAT properties, we selected PLA/PBAT blend systems. PLA/PBAT blends with various ratios of PLA and PBAT were prepared via melt mixing process using a twin screw extruder, and then their morphological and rheological properties were examined. Moreover, thermal behaviors were examined via differential scanning calorimeter with different heating rate. The blends of PLA/PBAT were appeared to immiscible, based on SEM image. The PBAT phases show particulate shape in the PLA domain when PLA contents were dominantly higher than PBAT contents. With the increasing of PBAT content, morphology of PLA/PBAT blend clearly revealed phase separated polymer blends. The immiscible PLA/PBAT blend showed unique shear thinning non-Newtonian behaviors compared with miscible blend system. |
