Cellulose has been widely applied in several fields such as food industry, drug delivery, film, membranes and paper due to their high strength, high stiffness, and low density. However, one of the issues using cellulose is strong hydrophilic surface that inhibits homogeneous composites within a nonpolar polymer. Homogeneous dispersion of cellulose in polymer matrix system is very important for the enhancement of mechanical properties of cellulose-polymer composite. This can be achieved by chemical modification of cellulose. In this study, the effect of chemical modification of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) is investigated. CNFs were functionalized by using carboxylic acid and amine. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) indicated modification of the hydroxyl groups of cellulose. Dispersibility in organic solvents was evaluated with the prepared samples and compared to the unmodified CNFs. |
