CO/N2 separation by membrane has rarely been studied because CO and N2 have similar molecular size and solubility. In this work, a chitosan-based composite membrane containing Ag ions was prepared for the selective separation of CO from N2. The reversible behavior between CO and chitosan containing Ag ions was investigated using the pressure decay method, and it demonstrated that CO and Ag ion-containing chitosan can form a reversible π-complex. Through this reversible interaction, chitosan containing Ag ions showed higher CO permeability than N2 and high CO/N2 selectivity (α > 15) via the facilitated transport mechanism. Furthermore, the membrane achieved > 10 separation factor for a CO/N2 mixed gas (50:50 vol. %) under continuous flow. |
