Enhancement of Power Conversion Efficiency in Orgainc Solar Cells via Molecular Engineering of Conjugated Polymers |

Nanomorphology control in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic photovoltaics cell is one of the most important issues to achieve a high power conversion efficiency (PCE). Low miscibility of conjugated polymers with fullerene derivatives often induces large phase separation in the polymer:fullerene BHJ film, resulting in poor photocurrent generation. We introduce a facile and generally applicable method to improve the polymer’s compatibility with fullerene derivatives. We developed a series of conjugated polymers (PTBDCBXs) incorporating a functional group which can effectively interact with fullerene derivatives. The morphology of the PTBDCBX:PC71BM BHJ film was improved and showed 10 nm scale phase separation compared with the unmodified polymer. As a result, the solar cell device employing PTBDCBX showed a PCE close to 8% due to increased photocurrent densities. Regarding the relation of the polymer’s chemical structure with morphological properties and the solar cell performance. |
