Defects in zeolite membranes cause degradation of separation performance of zeolite membranes. Thus, the accurate investigation of the defects in zeolite membranes is important for study of separation using membranes. Because the size of defects in membranes is very small, it is hard to analyze defects through a general measurement method(e.g. scanning electron microscopy; SEM). To identify the defects in zeolite membranes, we used fluorescence confocal optical microscopy (FCOM) measurement. The FCOM measurement is able to identify the structures of defects in the zeolite membranes using dye molecules of appropriate size. We investigated effects of dyeing conditions on FCOM measurement. Through FCOM measurement, we qualitatively and quantitatively identified defects in zeolite membranes. We analyzed the types of defects in zeolite membranes (cracks and grain boundary defects). We investigated how the defect affects the separation performance of the zeolite membranes. |
