제목 | Techno-economic Analysis & Life Cycle Assessment of the CO2 Hydrogenation Based Formic Acid Production Process |
초록 | With the imminent climate crisis, various technologies addressing the issue of carbon mitigation are attracting attention. Carbon capture and utilization(CCU) is deemed as a technology that is promptly applicable in large-scale, converting the captured CO2 into valuable materials. Formic acid (FA) is one of the viable products of CCU application, and is recently receiving additional attention as a liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC). However, large-scale production of CO2 hydrogenated FA is yet to be realized, with difficulties in its operability and economic feasibility. In this study, a process model for hydrogenating CO2 to produce formic acid is designed and optimized, and techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life-cycle assessment (LCA) is implemented to evaluate the feasibility of the process as a viable carbon mitigation technology. A novel process configuration is proposed to improve the operability and economic feasibility compared to the conventional process. The analysis results show that the proposed process is a viable option for large-scale carbon mitigation, in terms of both economic feasibility and carbon mitigation. |
