Silicone hydrogel is a material that combines silicon with a high oxygen transmission rate and hydrogel with high wettability. It can reduce irritation to the eyes and is attracting attention in the contact lens industry. General silicon hydrogel lenses made of siloxane-based polymers have a hydrophilic surface layer to promote wearability. However, the water content of the layer is not high enough to prevent dry eye symptoms such as irritated, scratchy and red eyes when wearing them for a long time. In this study, silicon hydrogel lenses were exposed to O2 plasma to form hydroxyl groups, and then they were reacted with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose to create crosslinked cellulose layers with high water content on the surfaces of the lenses. The contact lenses with high-water-content cellulose layers were prepared, and their physical properties were characterized. |
