Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs) have high efficiency, very low emissions, fast and convenient refueling. However, there are two major drawbacks to large-scale commercial use of DMFC systems, namely, limited anode catalyst activity and severe methanol crossover. To settle these problems, our new type of membrane was fabricated from nanocomposite of Nafion® containing layered inorganic fillers which was zirconium sulphophenyl phosphate (ZrSPP). ZrSPP was obtained by the reaction of zirconyl propionate and meta-sulphophenyl phosphonic acid. But new method could obtain uniform nanocomposite membrane through the mixed solution of ZrSPP/DMF with Nafion®/DMF solution. Inorganic particles of ZrSPP were placed as layered structures and exhibited excellent barrier properties due to tortuous paths for methanol molecules. Nafion®/ZrSPP 10 wt% nanocomposite membrane was delivered more than 104 mW/cm2 @ 0.4 V under λ = 3.0 of 1M MeOH at 70 ℃. |
