A novel extraction method of microalgal intracellular biomass using amine-containing polymer coatings |

A novel extraction process of microalgal intracellular biomass was proposed using a tertiary-amine-containing polymer coating, poly(dimethylaminomethylstyrene) (pDMAMS). Initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) was introduced to fabricate pDMAMS coating on the surface of membrane. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis showed that the tertiary amine functionality in the iCVD deposited pDMAMS was distinctively reserved. The zeta potential and scanning electron microscope (SEM) results also demonstrated that membrane surface was modified with positively charged, amine-containing polymer film without altering initial design of the surface morphology of membrane. The extraction process consists of only shaking the microalgal culture medium with the pDMAMS-modified membrane without further energy consumption. |
