We prepared polyethylene (PE)/multiwall carbon nanotube (MWNT) nanocomposites with various weight fractions by in situ metallocene polymerization and studied various properties of polymerized nanocomposites. This polymerization method consists of attaching a metallocene catalyst complex on the surface of MWNT, so that monomer can be polymerized from the MWNT surface. The polymerized nanocomposites showed good dispersion of MWNT in the PE matrix, which was checked by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The MWNT content of polymerized nanocomposites and thermal stability were measured using thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). Thermal stabilities (onset temperature, degradation temperature) dramatically enhanced as the amount of MWNT is increased. Electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity were also investigated. |
