Separation of Hydrogen-Nitrogen Gas Mixture by PTMSP/PDMS-Silica Composite Membranes |

Silica-filled PTMSP/PDMS membranes were made by dispersing 0-55wt%(based on polymer content) silica particles in the PTMSP/PDMS solution. PTMSP/PDMS-Silica composite membranes were prepared by solution casting method. FT-IR spectrum and SEM pictures have been taken to characterize the membranes. The separation properties of the gas mixture(H2,N2) through the composite membranes were studies as a function of pressure and percentage of silica. The number-average and weight-average molecular weight of PTMSP/PDMS graft copolymer were 1.78X105 and 4.39X105, respectively. The PTMSP/PDMS-Silica layer that was observed on the cross sections of the membranes is about 5 to 10µm thick layer. The total thickness of PTMSP/PDMS-Silica-PEI composite membrane is about 145µm. The separation factor of H2/N2 increased as the pressure of permeation cell and silica content of the membrane increased. PTMSP/PDMS-Silica 55wt% composite membrane was shown to possess separation factor(α=6.927) of H2/N2 which is about 2.3 times larger than that of PTMSP/PDMS composite membrane at ΔP 30psi and 25°C. |
