Influence of silica on thermal and mechanical behaviors of silicone matrix composites |

Novel silica particles were prepared by hydrolysis and polycondensation of a mixture of tetraethoxysilane and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane in ethanol and used as reinforcing fillers for a silicone matrix. The effects of silica content on the thermal and mechanical properties of silicone/silica composites were examined. The thermal stability of the composites increased with increasing silica content, as did their cross-linking density, but only up to 1 phr silica for the latter. The tensile strength of the composites peaked at 1 phr silica, due to the improved interfacial adhesion between the silica surface amino groups and the silicone matrix. |
