Synthesis and characterization of poly (2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate)-b-poly (L-histidine) diblock co-polymers |

We have used the combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and ring opening metathesis polymerization (RMOP) to synthesize a series of poly [2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate-bL-histidine] (PHEMA-b-PHIST) block co-polymers. 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was polymerized in a controlled way by ATRP without the use of hydroxyl protecting groups. Fast growth of the poly (HEMA) block was achieved with a CuBr/bipyridine system. The terminal halogen atom of the poly (HEMA) was changed to primary amine function, followed by silylation which serves as a macro initiator for the silazane mediated controlled polymerization of Benzyl-N-carboxy-L-histidine anhydride (HIS-NCA) via RMOP. The FT-IR and NMR analysis confirmed the complete terminal functionalization of the macro initiator. SEC measurements indicated complete attachment of the second block resulting in narrow polydispersity. (Mn = 5500-10000). |
