UV to NIR Chemically and Electrically Tunable Block Copolymer Photonic Gels |

Block copolymers are periodic materials that offer advantages as chemically and electrically tunable PBG materials. We employ a polystyrene-b-quartinized poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PS-b-QP2VP) block copolymer. This mesogel multilayer structure provides for swelling of the QP2VP gel layers while the glassy PS layers force gels to expand uniaxially normal to the layers. This gives extremely large tunability from UV-VIS to NIR region with up to 5th order PBG peaks observed during osmotic induced swelling. Applied electric fields cause electrophoretic transport of the counterions and strong stretching of the end-anchored QP2VP blocks due to electrostatic repulsion. |
