Stimuli responsive self-assembled materials are gaining growing attention with the promise of constructing smart and intelligent nano-sized devices in the field of material and biomaterial chemistry. Among various types of supramolecular building blocks, rigid-rod and flexible-coil segments are excellent candidates for creating supramolecular structures of various size and shape. This is in part due to the unique anisotropic molecular shape of rod-coils, which enables the formation of well-ordered structures even at low molecular weights. In addition, rod-coils exhibit dynamic changes in the details of supramolecular packing and the nature of thermodynamically stable supramolecular structure in response to the changes in molecular structure, temperature, solvent, pH, and guest encapsulation state. In this talk, stimuli responsive nanomaterials self-assembled from rod-coil building blocks will be presented together with their functional implications. |
