Reversible, Universal pH Sensing Composite Cellulose Nanofibers |

Halochromic or pH sensitive fibers are materials that are can change color due to an external stimulus, which are useful for biomedical applications especially for wound dressing, protective clothing, and filtration. The commercially used synthetic dyes possess severe health and environmental issues. Natural dyes that are extracted from plant sources are biocompatible and biodegradable alternatives for hazardous synthetic dyes. A pH sensing biopolymer nanocomposite consisting of electrospun cellulose nanofibers and a natural dye is examined. The results revealed that the developed nanofibrous pH sensor is capable of detecting pH values ranging from 1-14 with indicating unique color code for each pH. Moreover, the colors were reversible and the sensor is recyclable. The pH sensing properties were stable for relatively longer period. |
