Increasing the usage of disposable productsin accordance with personal hygiene leads to increase waste plastics generation and the biodegradable plastics have been paid attention to overcome the waste plastics issue. PHAs have high processability, however it is not possible to use 100% of PHAs for plastic products due to those low mechanical properties. CNCs which are nano structured biopolymer having high aspect ratio, have been used to enhance the mechanical properties of biodegradable plastics. However the CNCs are hydrophilic and thus it is not well dispersed in compounding hydrophobic PHAs. In order to enhance the low dispersity of CNCs, the silylation was applied for the hydrophobization. The silylation effect is determined by FT-IR spectrum, water contact angle and SEM-EDS image analysis and mechanical properties of the PHAs/silylated CNCs composite were determined by UTM. In result, elongation at break was increased up to 301% with a little decrease in the tensile modulus. |
