Phosphorous heteroatom doping in mesoporous carbon for efficient recovery of Neodymium (III) from industrial waste. |

The ever-increasing REE demand, lack of diversity in suppliers, and the environmental challenge associated with the processing of primary sources are crucial factors to develop an efficient strategy for REE recovery from secondary sources. Herein, phosphorus-doped mesoporous carbon (P-MC) was prepared as REE Nd (III) sorbent by employing a mixed solution of phytic acid and saccharose as phosphorous and carbon sources with mesoporous silica KIT-6 as a hard template. The adsorbent was characterized and the effects of different parameters that affect the recovery of Nd (III) ions were investigated. The performance of the material demonstrates that incorporating the phosphate functionality to mesoporous carbon is a promising strategy for selective uptake of REEs from an aqueous solution.
