Owing to their intriguing structural and optical properties, conjugated polydiacetylenes (PDAs) have received great attention from researchers. Dropping an organic solution containing diacetylene (DA) monomers into water, followed by sonication yields self-assembled DA supramolecules, which can be readily polymerized by 254 nm UV light. The polymerized DA suspension displays, in general, an intense blue color and undergoes a colorimetric transition to red color upon environmental perturbations. In this study, we developed a colorimetric fatty amine sensor based on conjugated polydiacetylene (PDA) supramolecules in aqueous solution. PDA supramolecules showed blue-to-red or blue-to-orange color transition upon exposure to fatty amines having different alkyl chain lengths. The hydrophobic interaction between aliphatic chains in the polymer and those of fatty amines is believed to cause the colorimetric response. |
