The effects of PP-g-MA molecular weight in polypropylene/clay nanocomposites |

Nanocomposites were an emerging area of contemporary research and received a great deal of attention. Polymer/clay nanocomposites were a new class of materials which show improved properties at very low loading levels compared with conventional filler composites. Among these improved properties were mechanical, dimensional, permeability, thermal stability and flame retardant enhancements with respect to the bulk polymer. In this study, polypropylene/clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending using an internal mixer with polypropylene, clay and newly designed PP-g-MA. Compatibilizers for preparing nanocomposites of high mechanical properties were synthesized. They were done by correlating relative absorbance values obtained from IR spectra with grafting levels of the sample as determined by titration method. The effects of the type of PP-g-MA on the properties of the polypropylene/clay nanocomposites were compared. The dispersion effect of silicate layers in the PP matrix could be observed from X-ray diffraction(XRD) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The mechanical properties of the polypropylene/clay nanocomposites showed significant enhancement. |
