The effect of Al electrode on the evolution of nanostructures by thermal annealing in the P3HT:PCBM solar cell blends is analyzed with synchrotron x-rays and its relationship with solar cell performance will be discussed. The improved performance of the solar cells with thermal annealing in the presence of Al layer on top of the blended P3HT:PCBM films is related to the increment of crystallinity and size of P3HT crystals but more related to the random orientation distribution of the crystals which is beneficial to the formation of interpenetration networks. In addition to that, the surface of the polymer film has significantly different structure when the Al layer is present on top of the films. A thin interlayer between the Al electrode and the blended film is formed by Al diffusion into the organic layer during the thermal annealing which is beneficial to form the interpenetrating network. |
