In plane switching liquid crystal display (IPS-LCD) is required to have high resolution, wide viewing angle, color performance and no image stacking. It is well known that very low pretlilt angle and high anti-rubbing strength are key requirements of liquid crystal alignment layer for IPS-LCD. In this study, we had synthesized a series of polyamic acids from 1,2,3,4-cyclobutanetetracarboxylic dianhydride [CBDA] and rigid aromatic diamines, like bis(4-amino-3-methylcyclohexyl)methane, which has very low pretilt angle from 0.1 to 0.9 °as well as excellent surface hardness. We have investigated typical properties required for conventional liquid crystal alignment layer such as thermal properties, transmittance as well as pencil hardness and compared them with those of polyimides prepared from flexible aromatic diamines. Further, effect of rubbing strength on surface morphology, surface tension and pretilt angle of polyimides liquid crystal alignment layer was also studied.
