For the developments electro-optical switchable devices, we synthesized the programmed palladium(II)-extended dichroic mesogen containing four photochromic azobenzene moieties. Here, the organometallic chemistry is purposely applied to the anisotropic soft materials to bridge the chromophores with the planar geometry of metal complex. By doping PDDA guest molecule in the host nematic liquid crystal, PDDA dye showed an excellent orientation with a high dichroic ratio and order parameter up to 14.6 and 0.82 due to the extended molecular structure. By switching the polarized light, absorption intensity can be changed through an in-plane electric field induced reorientation of aniotropic molecules. Moreover, we demonstrated a tunable polarized absorption property of PDDA-doped optical cell by modulating the exposure UV and Vis light in remote-controllable manner.
