Modified helical nanofilament phase confined in nanochannels |

Ferroelectric liquid crystals (LCs) have attracted interest due to their unique electric properties promising applications in fast-switching electrooptical devices. Among them, achiral bent-core LCs were reported accompanying not only ferroelectric switching behavior but polar and chiral properties with uniform helical nanofilament (HNF) structure. The general HNF mesogens possess the hydrolytically unstable benzylideneaniline (Schiff base) moiety accompanying limitations for applications. Here, we introduce the new modulated HNF phase HNF(mod) with 3,4’-disubstituted biphenyl moiety and controlled nanoconfinement system using anodic aluminum oxide (AAO). In AAO nanochannel, we can control not only geometrical properties of helical structure but even the overall structure transformation into a disc shape maintaining inter-molecular structure. Electron microscopy and GIXD (Grazing incidence x-ray diffraction) analysis confirm the functionality of this system in large-scale devices. |
