Recently, many researchers have focused their attention on eco-friendly polymers, especially on polylactic acid (PLA) which is a biodegradable and biocompatible polymer. Piezoelectricity in PLA is understood to originate from its molecular helical structure aided by the transformation of 103 helical conformation (α-crystalline form) to the 31 helical conformation (β-crystalline form) upon drawing the PLA film. In this study, uniaxially drawn PLA films and electrospun nanofiber webs were prepared and their piezoelectric characteristics were compared with that of a well-known piezoelectric PVDF. We also demonstrated more suitable electrospun conditions and prepared a variety of fabrication methods to enhance piezoelectric properties. Furthermore, we measured the piezoelectric output signals of the drawn films and nanofiber webs under the periodic external pressure and the results are discussed in detail.
