Nacre exhibits excellent mechanical properties due to the "brick and mortar" structure composed of inorganic platelets and organic binders. Cellulose nanofiber is one-dimensional nanocellulose with a high aspect ratio with a lightweight, high mechanical strength, and optical transparency. Montmorillonite is two-dimensional inorganic materials having few nano-meter thickness. In this study, we demonstrate the MMT/CNF nanocomposites for the eco-friendly ultra-strong film based on the layered nanostructure. The nano-structured effect to the bio-inspired MMT/CNF nanocomposites were characterized through the scanning electron microscope, tensile test, X-ray diffraction. The results indicate that MMT/CNF composites exhibit significantly stronger mechanical properties compared to both pristine CNF films and pristine MMT films. The addition of polydopamine, the natural adhesive, further reinforced the mechanical toughness by improving interaction between cellulose and MMT. |
