제목 The Preparation and Properties of Polypropylene-Clay Nanocomposites using the γ-irradiation
초록 Polymer–Clay Nanocomposites are a new class of composites which show improved properties in spite of the addition of a small amount of clay to polymers.1 These improved properties are mechanical, dimensional, permeable, thermal stability and flame retardant enhancements compared with virgin polymers or conventional microcomposites.2
In this work, we successfully developed the polypropylene–clay nanocomposites using the γ-irradiation without compatibilizers.3 First of all, Polypropylene-clay nanocomposites were studied by the modification of clay with γ-irradiation to introduce covalent bonds in nanocomposites, and prepared by melt-compounding using an internal mixer with polypropylene, clay modified by γ-irradiation.
The dispersion of silicate layers in the polypropylene matrix could be observed from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The formation of a covalent bonding between the polypropylene and silicate layer surface was indicated by infrared spectrum (FT-IR) and by Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) after purifying by absolute xylene in a Soxlet apparatus. The mechanical and thermal properties of resulting nanocomposites were separately measured as universal testing machine (UTM) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA).
