Scale-up study is very important in industrial crystallization since nucleation and crystal growth traits are sensitive to the thermal and mixing states of the solution. In this contribution, a method to facilitate the scale-up study for batch cooling crystallization is proposed using a reactor whichhas reduced jacket heat transfer area. It is shown that 30 times of volume scale-up effect can be easily achieved by blocking two third of the jacket area from heat transfer, which means that the thermal behavior of a 150L reactor can be replicated using a 5L reactor. The proposed method has an additional advantage over the usual scale-up study in thatthe hydrodynamics are intact and only the effects on thethermal behavior can be observed. The performance of the proposed using the reduced heat transfer area reactor is shown for cooling crystallization of ammonium sulphate. |
