A new application of metallic silver nanoparticles as a novel olefin carrier for facilitated olefin transport membranes has been explored. The surfaces of silver nanoparticles were chemically activated using p-benzoquinone as an electron acceptor. It is thus expected that the chemically activated surface may form complexes with olefin molecules, resulting in facilitated olefin transport. The activated surface, confirmed by XPS, may cause its interactions or complexation with olefin molecules, such as propylene and ethylene, as supported by FT-IR spectroscopy and ab-initio calculations. The facilitated olefin transport membrane using activated silver nanoparticles as a novel olefin carrier showed good separation performance of propylene/propane mixtures along with good long-term operational performance. |
