For flexible liquid crystal displays (LCDs), the mechanical stability of devices and the uniform alignment of the LC molecules on plastic substrates are critical factors of retaining the long-term performance. Here, we report on a flexible LCD based on an elastomer substrate having bilevel microstructures. The upper arrays of microstructures were directly fabricated on the lower microgrooves of the elastomer substrate, fabricated by a replica molding technique, using micromolding in capillary (MIMIC) technique. The upper arrays provide columnar spacers for the uniform cell gap and the mechanical stability of a flexible LCD is achieved, and the lower microgrooves induce the spontaneous alignment of the LC molecules on an elastomer substrate. |
