We used polymer-coated graphene nanosheets (GNSs) as templates for synthesizing silica nanosheets. Polymer-coated GNSs were obtained by reducing exfoliated graphite oxide in the presence of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). The utilization of polyelectrolytes not only effectively solves the aggregation problems between graphenes, but also provides the molecular template for controlled nucleation and growth of silica on the surface of GNSs. By this means, 2D sandwich-like graphene-based silica nanosheets can be formed. Silica nanosheets were obtained after calcination of silica/PEM-coated graphene and their thickness were easily controlled by varying reaction conditions. As-prepared silica nanosheets showed smooth surface and free-standing structure with size of several micrometers. |
