Cobalt doped TiO2 photocatalysts (0-10wt%) were prepared, characterized and evaluated for H2 production from methanol-water mixtures under Solar irradiation. Co/TiO2 has shown absorption in the visible region. Cobalt doping onto the surface of TiO2 creates new energy levels above the VB and below the CB of TiO2 resulting in a decrease in the band gap of TiO2. Also the comparatively large atomic size of Cobalt to titanium creates a distortion due to which oxygen vacancies are generated. The prepared photocatalysts were characterized by techniques like TGA, XRD, Raman, TEM, UV-Vis DRS, FTIR, XPS, BET-surface area, EPR and PL analysis. Among all the Cobalt doped TiO2 catalysts 2wt%Cobalt doped TiO2 has shown better activity under solar light irradiation for hydrogen production. The superior photocatalytic performance is attributed to high visible light absorption as well as effective charge carrier separation and strong interaction between metal to support. |
