Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) can swell up to thounsands times of their own weight in water. Poly(acrylic acid) based crosslinked materials have been widely used as SAPs, but their non-biodegradability might cause limitation in future uses. CMC-graft-poly(itaconic acid) was synthesized using an inverse suspension polymerization techniques. This process has advantages over aqueous solution polymerization process, such as efficient heat dissipation, lower viscosity, and its characteristics of generating crosslinked product in bead form. The crosslinked polymer was prepared using potassium persulfate as an initiator is in presence of sodium hydroxide as a neutralizing agent and N,N’-methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker. The polymerization was affected by various reaction conditions, such as concentrations of surfactants/monomer/initiator/neutralizing agent/crosslinker, water/oil ratio, temperature, and agitation speed. The detailed results will be discussed. |
