제목 Characterization of Ionic Polymer Metal Composite Actuators Prepared at Reduction Temperatures in Electroless Plating Process
초록 Ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC), which shows large bending deformation under low electric field (1-3V), is a promising candidate for artificial muscles and robotic actuators. IPMC was prepared via electroless plating of Pt on both sides of NafionTM film. In this study, the effect of reduction temperature in electroless plating process was investigated. Scanning electron micrographs and X-ray diffraction patterns of IPMC film clearly showed an increase in the deposition depth and density of Pt at higher reduction temperatures. From thermogravimetric analysis data, it was observed that the water swelling ratio of IPMC is in inverse proportion to the deposition depth and density of Pt, and that the water loss of IPMC is in proportion to those of Pt. It was also found that the performance of IPMC in terms of tip displacement, tip force, and response time was improved as the 1st and 2nd reduction temperature increased. It is postulated that the increase in deposition depth and density of Pt, due to enhanced diffusion at higher temperature, is responsible for the improvement in actuating ability of IPMC.
