Mechanically strong composite composed of biodegradable polymer and bioactive ceramics even in aqueous environments has been sought in biomaterial and biomedical engineering. Hydroxyapatite nanoparticle and chitosan (HAp-CS) composite has been usually studied for using as a bio-scaffold which, however, is too mechanically weak to use where mechanical strength would be necessary. We developed stubborn HAp-CS composites without polyanion coagulation processes. Void content of the composite is similar to the bone where HAp content varies from 50 wt% to 80 wt% based on the water absorption test in PBS buffer solution. For enhancing stability in aqueous environment, the composite was irradiated by electron beam. Morphology of the composite was studied using SEM, TEM, and XRD. And mechanical strength of the composite before and after water absorption was measured. |
