It is of great importance to synthesize large-quantity CNTs of high quality. In this study, we investigated the effect of the material type of reactor on the synthesis of CNTs in floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. A Quartz tube and a metal (inconel) tube were tested. It was found that the catalyst formation mechanism differs in each case due to the difference in the temperature distribution inside the two tubes having different thermal conductivities. The different temperature distribution might affect the decomposition ferrocene and thiophene. The IG/ID ratio of the synthesized CNT in the quartz tube was 2.75 and the yield was 15.6 mg/min. The IG/ID ratio of the CNTs produced in the metal tube was 16.22 and the yield was 1.71 mg/min. CNTs with low quality were produced at high rate in Quartz tubes, and CNTs with high quality were produced at low rate in metal tubes. Further understanding on the effect of tube type will bring about a better control on the CNT synthesis. |
