The 5-Ethylidene-2-norbornene (ENB), the third component for ethylene-propylene rubber, is obtained by the isomerization of 5-vinyl-2-norbornene (VNB) in the presence of a basic catalytic system. The basic catalytic system consists of an alkali metal hydride and an amine. The isomerization effect of the alkali metal hydrides decreases in the order of K>Na>Li. The structure of the amine also affects to the isomerization reaction. 1,2-Aliphatic diamines such as EDA (ethylene diamine) produced ENB in high yield, while aromatic diamine and aliphatic monoamine were inert to the isomerization. |
