Poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether) (PPE) was successfully prepared by the biphasic polymerization of 4-bromo-2,6-dimethylphenol by the use of silica gel as a promoter at 20 ºC for 6 h under air. Silica gel was alkaline hydrolyzed to afford water soluble siloxane oligomers, which acted as an effective phase transfer agent for the biphasic polymerization of 4-bromo-2,6-dimethylphenol under mild conditions. The pure PPE was easily separated by the ordinal reprecipitation process from the siloxane oligomers, which was retransformed into silica gel by the condensation of silanol group in acidic medium. The recovered silica gel also functioned as a phase transfer agent after the hydrolysis for the biphasic polymerization. |
