Incorporation of only a small amount (3 – 7 wt%) of nanoparticulate such as layered silicate (MMT), silica, CNT may greatly alter some important mechanical and electrical properties of Nafion matrix. These filler can be easily modified and functionalized to implement unique properties for performance of IPMCs. Our recent studies have showed that MMT and silica can be dispersed in nano-scale. All the IPMCs based on Nafion nanocomposite exhibit improved displacements and blocking forces compared to pure Nafion based IPMC. Due to barrier propety of MMT and hygroscopic nature of silica, water loss of IPMC under dc voltage is greatly reduced, which is significant in term of IPMC performance durability. In the case of Nafion / MMT nanocomposite, response rate of IPMC strip under electric field is small, which is attributed to the barrier effect of the clay platelet; while in Nafion / silica systems, response rate is comparable with that of conventional IPMC, probably due to excess amount of metal cations introduced to the filler by a modification process. The combination of these two systems in form of a multilayered IPMC results in greatly improved blocking force displacement and durability. Moreover, improvements in mechanical properties and relaxation were achieved without any significant loss of other important properties, implying that introduction of these kinds of nanoparticulate into Nafion may be a potential alternative of IPMC tailoring and design for specific applications. |
